Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Tom Diekwisch, Texas A&M University, Dallas, USA, is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Basic Research in Biological Mineralization Award. Diekwisch was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.
Diekwisch is Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontics, Bernhard Gottlieb Endowed Chair in Craniofacial Research, and Director of the Center for Craniofacial Research and Diagnosis at the Texas A&M College of Dentistry, Dallas, TX. He holds a DMD degree in Dental Medicine and two PhD degrees (in Anatomy and in the Philosophy of Science) from the Philipps-University of Marburg, Marburg, West Germany. He currently holds an honorary professorship at Jilin University, Changchun, China, and he was the first director and endowed chair of the Allan G. Brodie Laboratory at the University of Illinois, Chicago, before he moved to Texas A&M.
Diekwisch has published more than 115 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and book chapters, principally in the areas of the evolution and development of tooth enamel and the periodontium, the use of periodontal stem cells for tissue engineering, and epigenetics and microRNAs in periodontal development and health. He has presented these research topics at many national and international meetings over the years. He has also been an exemplary mentor and educator to numerous graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members in research training. In every instance, Diekwisch has provided them with an exceptional foundation for their future careers.
The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Basic Research in Biological Mineralization is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque, and is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize basic research in the field of biological mineralization.
