Nobuhiko Kamada earned his Ph.D. from Keio University School of Medicine, Japan, in 2007 under the mentorship of Prof. Toshifumi Hibi. He was appointed as an Instructor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Keio University. In 2009, he joined the laboratory of Gabriel Nuñez in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research fellow.
In 2013, he joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020, and to Professor in 2024. In 2021, he was also appointed as a Specially Appointed Professor at Osaka University’s Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC), Japan (adjunct appointment).
Dr. Kamada's research focuses on understanding host-microbe interactions in human health and disease, with a particular emphasis on gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Recently, he has been investigating the microbial and immunological connections between the mouth and gut in the context of gastrointestinal disease pathogenesis. He is the author of over 100 publications, which have garnered more than 20,000 citations (h-index 62, Google Scholar).
