Understanding Negotiations Strategies for Success in Academic Dentistry

Published on: March 20, 2024

Alexandria, VA, USA – A Symposium discussing best negotiation practices and strategies in the context of dental academia was presented at the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA.

Gender-based disparities are present and have been described in academic health environments. While these disparities are multifactorial, studies have shown that women are less likely to engage in negotiations during a job offer and less effective than males when requesting direct compensation, such as research funding, spousal employment/assistance, etc. Moreover, having highly supportive academic supervisors improved negotiation effectiveness for women.

Negotiation is a skill that takes knowledge and practice and can be critically important for the individual and the organization’s success during a job offer and throughout the individual tenure at an academic institution. Effort distribution, academic track, professional development opportunities, research space, and the existence of a mentoring committee are some aspects that might involve negotiations.

In this symposium, the IADR Women in Science Network gathered several successful academicians at different stages of their careers to speak about negotiation challenges and achievements based on best practices and scientific evidence. The session was tailored to post-docs, early-career faculty, and mid-career faculty seeking to understand effective negotiation strategies to improve their careers and institutions success in the long run.

Organized by Grace De Souza, Patricia Miguez, and Erica Teixeira, the Symposium, “Understanding Negotiations Strategies for Success in Academic Dentistry” took place on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 8 a.m. Central Standard Time (UTC-6).
