Journal of Dental Research Publishes Special Issue on Advanced Imaging

Published on: December 18, 2024

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) have announced the publication of a Special Issue of the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) entitled, “Advanced Imaging.” The guest editors are Dana Graves, Professor of Periodontics and Vice Dean, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, USA, and Sergio Uribe, Associate Professor and Lead Researcher, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Oral Health, Rīga Stradiņš University, Latvia.

Over the past three years, advances in spatial transcriptomics, high-throughput omics, and advanced imaging technologies have provided new insights into the cellular organization of tissues and biofilms at the molecular and cellular levels. This JDR special issue highlights some of these advances as they provide new insights into oral biology and demonstrates how they may be implemented for the benefit of dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) health.

“The development of new imaging technologies in this decade alone has been truly transformative,” said JDR Editor-in-Chief Nicholas Jakubovics. “The coupling of advanced imaging with AI has the potential to define an entirely new era in oral health research.”

To complement the release of the special issue, Associate Editor Dana Graves conducted interviews with co-author Jeremie Oliver Piña on the paper within the issue entitled, "Spatial Multi-omics Reveals the Role of the Wnt Modulator, Dkk2, in Palatogenesis," and with co-author Ana Caetano on the paper within the issue entitled "Computational Methods for Image Analysis in Craniofacial Development and Disease."

The studies contained in the special issue demonstrate the growing role of advanced imaging technologies and AI in DOC research. The next challenge, however, is how to translate these advances into clinical practice as quickly, safely, and equitably as possible, thereby reducing the prevalence of oral diseases. This will require ongoing innovation and collaboration between the different actors to ensure such technologies reach clinical settings and reduce health inequities worldwide.
