JDR Special Issue: The Relationship Between Oral and Systemic Diseases

The relationship between oral and systemic diseases has evolved significantly over the past few decades. While substantial progress has been made in this field, there remain opportunities to deepen our understanding of this complex topic. Current evidence primarily focuses on the association between periodontitis and various systemic diseases, while other oral diseases and conditions such as dental caries, tooth loss, and xerostomia have received comparatively little attention. Additionally, while the studies have evolved from the simple association to a more detailed understanding of complex bi/multi-directional interactions and their putative pathophysiological events, the exact mechanisms connecting oral and systemic diseases remain elusive.

Basic science research can shed light on unexplored mechanisms, molecules, and biomarkers that may elucidate the oral-systemic connection. Additionally, observational studies can enhance our understanding of the connection between these diseases at the population level and identify potential risk factors common to both oral and systemic conditions. This knowledge can serve as a foundation for integrating oral health into the broader context of non-communicable diseases. Furthermore, clinical trials are fundamental for assessing the extent to which oral and systemic diseases influence one another, potentially modifying oral health interventions.

We encourage submissions that apply cutting-edge and innovative approaches to critically explore and generate evidence that will advance our comprehension of the oral-systemic relationship and inform integrative care practices and policies that focus on treating the individual as a whole.
