 Originally trained as a zoologist, Dr. Jukka Jernvall has used mammalian teeth to link research on fossils with experimental studies. He is an Academy Professor and Group Leader at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Professor of Quantitative Evolutionary Phenomics at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, and the president of the European Society for Evolutionary Developmental Biology. Dr. Jernvall's laboratory is currently focused on the interplay between growth and patterning, haplosufficiency, and reduction of molar size in humans and other species. Past accomplishments include the discovery of secondary enamel knots in the regulation of tooth shape.
