Professor Barry F.A. Quinn, Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education, Academic Lead & Head for Restorative Dentistry, University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry & King James IV Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Barry was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2023 recognising his pioneering and unique contribution to dental education, only the 12th dental recipient in 24 years of the scheme.
Barry is presently Secretary General of the Association Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), president of the Royal Society of Medicine, Section of Odontology (2024), immediate past president of the British Alliance for Researchers in Dental Education and Scholarship (BARDES), president of the Dental Teachers of Professionalism in the UK (2022) and a past-president of the Education Research Group (ERG) of the International Association of Dental Research (2018-2020) and metropolitan branch past president of the British Dental Association (2017). He is also a Dental Council elected member for the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2017, Barry was the main lead for the “Shaping the Future of Dental Education” world workshop held at King’s College London.
At the University of Liverpool, Barry leads the integrated teaching of restorative dentistry for the collaborative learning core for the interprofessional education of dental and dental therapy students. Barry is a past recipient of the ADEE mature educators award (2013) and interprofessional educators award (2016) and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) emerging leaders (2021).
Barry’s main research has included interprofessional education, haptic virtual reality surgical skills education and he completed a PhD in this area at King’s College London. He has been fortunate to win many UK and international awards, such as the Medical Futures award (2011), British Education Technology & Trade Awards for “Innovation in Education” with his colleagues in the hapTEL team and in 2020 a King’s Civic Challenge award working with the Borough food cooperative as well as being the lead on the Henry Schein Practice Green awards for campus initiatives in 2023. Barry has published over 200 refereed publications, conference papers and abstracts
