IADR/IAP Ricardo Teles Clinical Research Award

This research award, sponsored by The International Academy of Periodontology (IAP) and BIOGAIA offered through the IADR Periodontal Research Group (PRG), was established in recognition of Dr. Ricardo Teles contributions to Clinical Periodontal Research.
This award recognizes a Clinical Research Paper accepted for publication or published during the preceding year. One paper reporting the results of a clinical study will be selected in one of the following categories: onset, progression and treatment of periodontal diseases.

2023 Recipient

Prof. Dr. Karim M. Fawzy El-Sayed

Professor of Oral Medicine and Periodontology, Director of the research and dental supplies unit, and the stem cells and tissue engineering unit at the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. 
Professor and  head of the research division at the Clinic for Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology, University of Kiel in Germany.

He completed his BDS in dentistry in 2002 and in 2006 the Diploma for the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFDS-RCSEd). In 2008, he received his MSc in Oral Medicine and Periodontology, from Cairo University and was awarded in 2009 a Grant from the DAAD to complete his PhD at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, where he established his stem cells research group. In 2010, he developed minimally invasive techniques for the isolation of multipotent oral stem/progenitor cells. Dr. Fawzy El-Sayed obtained his Dr. med. dent and his PhD degrees in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded the IADR-Craniofacial Biology Award and the Egyptian State Incentive Award in Medical Sciences. In 2016, he was awarded the IADR young investigator award of the implantology group and obtained his Habilitation degree and ‘Venia Ligend’, in the field of stem cells and periodontal tissue regeneration from the University of Kiel, Germany. In 2021 and 2023 he received the Straumann/DGParo Innovation Award twice as well as the Group Research Award from the German Academy of Periodontology (DGParo). In 2022 the Egyptian State Excellence Award in Medical Sciences. In 2023 he was awarded the IADR/IAP Ricardo Teles Clinical Research Award in Periodontology. Dr. Fawzy El-Sayed has multiple international publications in the field of stem cells and periodontal regeneration with a special emphasis on regenerative inflammatory interactions and clinical translation https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Karim+El-sayed+OR+fawzy+El-sayed and is since 2024 on the editorial board at the Journal of Periodontal Research.
