Tuula Salo Named Winner of the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine & Pathology Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Tuula Salo as the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine & Pathology Research. Salo, from the University of Helsinki, Finland, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA.

Salo is a Professor of Oral Pathology in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases at the University of Helsinki. She received her PhD from the University of Oulu in Finland where she worked on cancer invasion. She also received her dental degree and specialty training in Oral Pathology from the same institution. Salo spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at UCLA before returning to Finland where she has built her research program in cancer and wound healing focusing on the basement membrane, integrins, and matrix metalloproteinases. 

Salo has supervised 32 PhD students and published over 390 manuscripts. In addition to collaborations with research groups at multiple universities in Finland, she collaborates with groups in Brazil and the United Kingdom. Salo has received several national and international awards including a First Class Medal of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Rod Cawson Award from the International Association of Oral Pathology. 

One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone, and the oral soft tissue.
