Siddharth Shanbhag Named Recipient of the IADR Osteology Foundation New Investigator Award in Oral Tissue Regeneration

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Siddharth Shanbhag, University of Bergen, Norway as recipient of the IADR Osteology Foundation New Investigator Award in Oral Tissue Regeneration. Shanbhag was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.

Shanbhag is a Postdoctoral Researcher focused on tissue engineering for bone regeneration and has a background in clinical dentistry with special training in Periodontology and related research. Since 2015, his focus has been novel regenerative approaches using stem cells and biologics. During his predoctoral and doctoral training he gained broad experience in all aspects of preclinical translational research including cell culture, animal models, analyses (micro-CT, histology, immunohistochemistry) and scientific writing.

His work is documented by several publications and honors including those from the IADR Aubrey Sheiham Award (2014); NOF Hatton Award (2017); Karring–Nyman Award in Periodontal Research (2018); the Osteology Foundation – Education Grant (2018); and Young Researcher Grant (2019). He was also an invited author for the 13th European Workshop on Periodontology (2019).

Shanbhag’s postdoctoral training focuses on more translational research, specifically, the use of cell-secretomes rather than cells for bone regeneration. As PI in a recently completed project funded by the Osteology Foundation (YRG-18-152), he developed a novel method to functionalize collagen membranes with stem cell-secretomes and demonstrated its efficacy in rodent models of bone regeneration.

Now in its third year, the IADR Osteology Foundation New Investigator Award in Oral Tissue Regeneration is jointly sponsored by the IADR and the Osteology Foundation, with funding provided exclusively by the Osteology Foundation. Funding research into all aspects of oral tissue regeneration is a core task of the Osteology Foundation. Shanbhag will receive up to US$75,000.
