Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Nikolaos Donos as the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease. Donos, from Queen Mary University of London, England, UK, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA.
Donos is Professor of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. He is the director of the research institute and the head of the center for clinical research at this institution. Donos started his undergraduate studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, where he obtained his DDS degree. He then moved to Denmark where he specialized in periodontics at the Royal Dental College of the University of Aarhus. In 1996 he received a Master of Science in Periodontology, and his PhD in 1998.
His research concerns bone healing and regeneration around teeth and implants after treatments using various bone grafting materials, membrane barriers, enamel matrix derivatives, and synthetic peptides. Using in vivo models, he described the sequence of events involved in bone healing, including the effects of biodegradation of collagen or synthetic barriers and their influence on tissue regeneration. In addition, his group studied the impact of systemic diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis on bone healing after regenerative procedures. He also investigated differences in wound healing and revascularization after other types of periodontal interventions.
Donos also researches the effect of titanium surfaces on the osseointegration of dental implants, especially the biologic and genetic mechanisms involved in the accelerated bone healing observed with hydrophilic titanium surfaces. Donos has 248 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 56. He has received several awards, including the IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine, and honorary professorships at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Queensland.
The Research in Periodontal Disease Award is generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive Company. One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award recognizes, encourages, and stimulates outstanding achievements in research and its translation through clinical research in periodontal disease.
