Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) is pleased to announce the IADR Dianne Rekow Mentoring in Science Award. Rekow was the 88th President of the IADR (2011-2012) and the 35th President of the AADOCR (2006-2007). She passed away on August 11, 2022.
Rekow was a board member of many dental associations in academia and industry. She was the Executive Dean of the King’s College London Faculty of Dentistry, Oral, and Craniofacial Sciences (2012-2016), and the Vice-Provost of Engineering and Technology at New York University (2002-2012). She was an international authority on aesthetic and restorative dentistry as well as one of the early pioneers of, and leader in, the development of digital dentistry. She held several patents in the dental field and is the author of, or contributor to, more than one hundred publications.
Through her legacy, the goal of the new award is to provide resources that will enable the mentoring of a promising early career researcher by a mid-career female faculty in the dental, oral, and craniofacial sciences. The award was introduced by the IADR Women in Science Network and initially funded by a generous donation from Dr. Van Thompson, Rekow’s husband, long-time IADR member, and former chair of the Department of Biomaterials and Biomimetics at New York University College of Dentistry. Thompson spoke more about the award in a recent interview with IADR.
The funds will be managed by IADR and awarded once per year to the mentor/mentee institution to cover eligible expenses, including the mentee’s one year stipend, related experimental costs such as equipment fees and research supplies, and travelling expenses to the IADR General Session & Exhibition.
The Inaugural Recipient of the award will be announced during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2025 IADR/PER General Session & Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain.
The funds will be awarded once per year to the mentor/mentee institution for the following eligible expenses: mentee’s one full year of stipends, related experimental costs such as equipment fees, research supplies, and traveling expenses to the IADR General Session & Exhibition. As donations increase, the funds will be awarded to assist both the mentor and mentee. The expectation is that fellowships in the range of $30,000 to $75,000 will be awarded annually.
