Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Gerardo Maupomé, Indiana University, Indianapolis, USA, is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist in Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Award. Maupomé was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.
After receiving his dental training at the Universidad Nacional in Mexico City, Maupomé received an MSc in Experimental Oral Pathology in 1986 and a PhD in Public Health in 1991 from the University of London, UK. In 2005, He became a professor with Indiana University School of Dentistry and continued in that role until 2017.
In addition to his present professorship at the FSPH he is currently an Investigator with the Center for Urban Health in the Schools of Science, of Liberal Arts, and of Medicine, in Indianapolis; a Visiting Professor with the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom; and an Affiliated Professor with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington.
Maupomé is a recipient of several national and international awards. In 2019, he was awarded the Hispanic American Service Award as Outstanding Community Leader by La Plaza, Inc., the largest Hispanic community organization in Indiana. He was also co-author of the publication selected for the IADR 2019 Giddon Award for Distinguished Research in the Behavioral Sciences. His research has great impact in dental public health and in the community where he works. Furthermore, his research addresses the practical aspects that are effective at reducing barriers to accessing care and improving treatment outcomes.
The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioral, Epidemiological and Health Services Research is supported by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health and is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding achievements in the areas of behavioral science and health services research as they relate to dentistry. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque and is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
