Research, Publications and Presentations:

I have been working as a clinician, educator and researcher in academia for the past 30 years. During these years, I contributed significantly to curriculum development where I had leadership roles in developing under- or post-graduate teaching programs in close collaboration with medical, engineering, basic science and clinical disciplines. I have supervised many Master of Science (>90), Doctorate of Dental Medicine (>50) and Ph.D students (25) inter- and transdisciplinary.

After my specialization in prosthodontics, my clinical and research career focused on translational and clinical research with a particular emphasis on development and application of dental biomaterials and addressing clinically relevant questions. This resulted in a wealth of translational and clinical research output (>800 peer-reviewed publications; h-index: 71; google-index: 98; i-10-index: 532; >37.000 citations, 4 patents) (OrcID: 0000-0002-9623-6098), outstanding international research network and increasing competitive and non-competitive funded grants. I am editor-in-chief of journal “Frontiers in Dental Medicine: Reconstructive Dentistry” and I also serve for the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals.

Personal Statement:

For almost 27 years, I am a member of the IADR and have served for the IADR in various capacities. IADR has always been a kind of academic nest, a second affiliation to me throughout my career where I thoroughly enjoy diversity, equity and continuously learn from different disciplines at the annual meetings. Having had affiliations in Asia, Central Europe, Scandinavia, South America, USA and through numerous collaborations with different continents globally, as a clinician and scientist, I had the chance to observe the diverse local but also common global needs of the profession. This allowed me to cover a large plethora of topics across dental, medical and basic science disciplines in my scientific activities.
Owing to my cross-university network globally and covering different disciplines of dentistry in my research, during my tenure, I will dedicate my efforts in more intensive and efficient collaborations, set research strategies, contribute to healthcare policies, expand research and clinical activities with faster societal impact. I will also focus on supporting emerging domains in order to develop new diagnostic methods, progress novel therapy options, regenerate tissues and improve teaching tools. This requires coordinating different research fields simultaneously. In that context, it is important to me to share our resources globally in a more structured and sustainable way. Being the most scientific and professional organisation in dental and craniofacial research, IADR has a pivotal role in shaping the future of the profession. Together with you all, it will be a great pleasure and honour to contribute to the transformation of the profession with the ultimate goal of maintaining oral and general health, and function throughout life.
