Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Klaus Jandt, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany is the recipient of the Wilmer Souder Award. Jandt was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.
Jandt is Chair of Materials Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany. He started his undergraduate studies at Hamburg University, where he completed a Diploma-Physics, and then earned his PhD degree in Material Science. He has devoted his research career to the study of important and practical problems in biomaterials science at University Bristol, Cornell University and the current position. Much of his effort was spent in the three major areas of blue light curing technology, dental enamel erosion, and surface properties and biological interactions of dental implants. The proof of concept for the use of the blue LED (light emitting diode) as a dental photocuring tool is attributed to Jandt and his co-worker.
Jandt has presented various papers on this subject and published more than 20 papers just on this topic. His achievements greatly contributed to establish the current daily dental practice using many kinds of light cured dental materials. In total he has published more than 100 papers on dental materials. He has served the scientific community and received numerous awards for his efforts. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Dental Research and currently serves on the editorial boards of many international journals.
Supported by an endowment provided by the IADR Dental Materials Group, this is the oldest of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and consists of a monetary prize and a plaque. The award honors Wilmer Souder, the motivating force in establishing the Dental Section at the National Bureau of Standards and is designed to encourage interest in dental materials research. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
